Died: 26 March 1827\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ludwig_van_Beethoven\">Ludwig van Beethoven<\/a>\u2019s <em>String Trio in D Major, Op. 9, No. 2<\/em> played by three members of the Orchestra, Qing Hou, violin, Lawrence Neuman, viola, and Brant Taylor, cello. I\u2019m not a big fan of chamber music, but enjoyed this pretty well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_221\" style=\"width: 259px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-221\" href=\"http:\/\/byronleonard.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=221\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-221\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-221\" title=\"Ludwig van Beethoven \" src=\"http:\/\/byronleonard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Beethoven-249x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ludwig van Beethoven \" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/byronleonard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Beethoven-249x300.jpg 249w, http:\/\/byronleonard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Beethoven.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joseph Karl Stieler (1781\u20131858): Portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven when composing the Missa Solemnis (1820)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After the trio, <a title=\"Lawrence Rapchak, music director of the Northbrook Symphony\" href=\"http:\/\/www.northbrooksymphony.org\/NSO2010-2011\/17%20Rapchak\/Rapchak.htm\">Lawrence Rapchak<\/a>, music director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northbrooksymphony.org\/\">Northbrook Symphony<\/a> gave a presentation on the evening\u2019s program. He spent the most time on Beethoven\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, Op. 67<\/em>, but also talked about the <em>Symphony No. 8 in F Major, Op. 93<\/em> and the Overture to <em>Fidelio<\/em>. He went through the symphonies, talking about the musical elements and structure, playing themes on the piano or playing excerpts from orchestra performances. His delivery was quick, lively and very interesting. It was perhaps the best and most helpful talk I\u2019ve ever heard about music, especially among the pre-concert talks. I would love to hear more by him.<\/p>\n<p>Nancy and I enjoyed the program conducted by 81-year-old <a title=\"Bernard Johan Herman Haitink.  Born:  March 4, 1929\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bernardhaitink.com\/\">Bernard Haitink<\/a>. I think my enjoyment and understanding were enhanced by the Rapchak presentation. I heard more and noticed more.
